MAZATLÁN, Sinaloa – The municipal government of Mazatlán has begun restoring traffic flow on the iconic Avenida Del Mar following a significant structural collapse caused by intense ocean waves. While the northbound lane has been reopened to the public, the southbound lane will remain closed as reconstruction efforts continue.
The damage occurred on a 100-meter stretch of the newly constructed promenade, which buckled under the pressure of continuous and heavy surf that has battered the coastline over the past several weeks. Recognizing the severity of the structural failure, Civil Protection units immediately cordoned off the area to ensure the safety of pedestrians and tourists.
Emergency Repairs and Infrastructure Assessment
Following several hours of intensive work, municipal heavy machinery was deployed to demolish the ruined infrastructure and prepare the site for reconstruction. Martín Gallardo Noriega, head of Public Works, reported that the technical evaluation revealed the damage was more extensive than initially projected, impacting a larger surface area of the pedestrian sidewalk than first estimated.
“The absolute priority of the municipal administration is to safeguard the physical integrity of residents and visitors,” a government spokesperson stated. “We aim to proceed with the removal of debris and subsequent reconstruction as efficiently as possible to restore regular traffic on Avenida Del Mar in the shortest time possible.”
Current Traffic Status
Óscar García, subdirector of the Road Unit, confirmed that the current traffic configuration allows for northbound travel, while the southbound lane remains restricted.
Authorities are urging motorists to exercise extreme caution while navigating the area. Drivers are requested to strictly follow all posted signage and adhere to the directions provided by traffic personnel stationed on-site to prevent accidents and manage the flow of vehicles around the construction zone.
