OAXACA, Mexico — The Mexican Navy (Semar) successfully intercepted a vessel transporting approximately 1.268 tons of alleged cocaine off the coast of Oaxaca during a joint maritime patrol with the U.S. Coast Guard.

According to official reports, the operation took place in the Pacific Ocean, approximately 366 nautical miles south of Huatulco. Naval units, including surface and aerial assets, were deployed to intervene after detecting the vessel.

During the inspection, authorities discovered 46 bundles containing roughly 1,268 kilograms of a substance with characteristics similar to cocaine. Six individuals were detained during the operation; five of them are foreign nationals. All six were read their rights and placed at the disposal of the relevant authorities to determine their legal status.

Both the vessel and the seized cargo were transported to the 22nd Naval Zone in Puerto Chiapas, Chiapas. The evidence will subsequently be handed over to the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) in coordination with the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) for further investigation. The judicial authority will officially confirm the weight and composition of the substance.

According to data from the Mexican Navy, this seizure brings the total amount of alleged drugs intercepted at sea by naval personnel during the current administration to more than 90 tons.

Authorities estimate that the seized cargo represents an economic blow of approximately 289.1 million pesos to criminal groups. The haul is estimated to be equivalent to approximately 2.536 million doses.
