Major Infrastructure Overhaul to Save Pátzcuaro Lake: 10 New Plants and 116km of Collectors

- October 28, 2026

The Mexican government, through the National Water Commission (Conagua), is investing 1.1 billion pesos into the Pátzcuaro Lake Sanitation Plan. This initiative, part of the “”Plan Michoacán for Peace and Justice””, aims to restore the environmental health of one of the country’s most iconic bodies of water.

Luis Roberto Arias Reyes, head of the Conagua Michoacán delegation, highlighted that the project includes a comprehensive overhaul of the region’s wastewater infrastructure. Key actions include:

  • Modernization: Upgrading six existing wastewater treatment plants in Las Garzas, Janitzio, San Pedrito, Quiroga, Tzintzuntzan, and San Andrés Ziróndaro.
  • Construction: Building four new treatment plants in San Juan Tumbio, Ihuatzio, Tzurumutaro, and an additional site in Quiroga.
  • Infrastructure Expansion: Rehabilitating more than 116 kilometers of sanitary collectors and addressing 10 wetlands in the surrounding area.

The initiative is expected to directly benefit more than 142,000 residents in the municipalities of Pátzcuaro, Tzintzuntzan, Quiroga, and Erongarícuaro. These communities will gain access to more efficient hydraulic and sanitary infrastructure for wastewater management.

Beyond environmental protection, the comprehensive sanitation of Lake Pátzcuaro is projected to stimulate economic growth and productivity for the indigenous communities on the islands of Janitzio, Tecuena, La Pacanda, and Yunuén. It also aims to bolster the economies of localities such as Urandén and Huecorio, which rely heavily on fishing and tourism as their primary economic pillars.
