The port of Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo marked the start of its international tourism season this Monday with the arrival of the first winter flight from Calgary, Canada.
The WestJet aircraft, carrying 144 passengers, arrived at the Zihuatanejo International Airport to a traditional welcome. The reception was organized by Municipal President Lizette Tapia Castro, Pedro Castelán Reyna (Executive Director of the Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Convention and Visitors Office), and representatives from the local hotel association. Visitors were greeted with folk music, traditional dances, and symbolic gifts from the region.
Mayor Tapia Castro expressed confidence that the upcoming winter holiday period will surpass previous records for both domestic and international flights. Last year, the destination transported nearly 800,000 passengers by air, a figure the local government aims to exceed this season, bolstered by strong hotel reservation trends.
Pedro Castelán Reyna confirmed that the destination is maintaining its existing international flight frequencies and noted that there is a strong possibility of incorporating new routes, primarily from Canada.
The momentum is expected to continue shortly, with a second flight from Vancouver, Canada, scheduled to arrive this Thursday, October 29, with reported full occupancy.
