Guanajuato has been identified as the second state in Mexico with the highest number of victims of residential burglary (robo a casa habitación), accounting for 8.31 percent of the total victims nationwide.
According to figures released by the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, the state recorded 2,393 victims of residential theft between January and September of this year. While there were 2,393 total victims reported, the State General Prosecutor’s Office (Fiscalía General del Estado) opened 1,882 formal investigations during the same period.
The federal report highlights a distinction in the nature of these crimes: 1,802 incidents were committed without violence, while 237 were reported as violent robberies.
On a national scale, there were 24,550 victims of residential burglary. Guanajuato’s total of 2,393 victims places it in a close second place, trailing just behind the State of Mexico. Notably, the State of Mexico reported 2,330 victims, despite having a significantly larger population.
Other states ranking high in residential theft include Mexico City in third place with 1,808 victims, Puebla in fourth with 1,448, and Hidalgo in fifth with 1,350.
Under Article 191 of the State of Guanajuato Penal Code, the sanctions for residential burglary can reach up to 10 years in prison, with the severity of the sentence determined by the value of the stolen goods relative to the Unit of Measure and Update (UMA).
