MEXICO CITY — Families of children battling cancer have filed a formal criminal complaint with Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office (FGR), accusing Andrés Manuel López Beltrán—the son of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador—and Jorge Amílcar Olán Aparicio of high-level corruption and crimes against humanity.
The lawsuit, spearheaded by the National Movement for the Health of Children with Cancer, charges the pair with genocide, organized crime, and culpable homicide. The allegations center on their purported roles in orchestrating a network of irregular contracts within the national health sector, which advocates say has led to chronic shortages of essential medications and the misappropriation of public funds.
Israel Rivas Bastidas, spokesperson for the movement, issued a scathing indictment against López Beltrán (commonly known as “Andy”) and Olán Aparicio, whom he identifies as a “frontman” for numerous companies. He specifically highlighted a company named Biomedix, alleging it was used to secure multi-million dollar contracts for medications that were reportedly purchased at inflated prices.
“We are legally pursuing and reporting Andrés Manuel López Beltrán and Amílcar Olán Aparicio, who serves as a front for many companies, including Biomedix, which has dedicated itself to obtaining million-dollar contracts for medicines,” Rivas Bastidas stated. He further noted that some medical professionals have raised concerns regarding the quality of certain oncological drugs supplied through these channels.
The complaint alleges that the accused utilized “frontmen” to simulate the purchase of medications, a scheme that resulted in severe shortages across various hospitals nationwide. Rivas Bastidas expressed deep frustration with the legal process, accusing the accused of mutual protection and “theft” of public resources.
“The Attorney General’s Office knows this; they aren’t fooling anyone. They have the information, but they are protecting each other,” Rivas Bastidas said in an interview. “It is a theft—they stole the money for the medications. The children of Andrés Manuel López Obrador and their frontmen stole it from them.”
The complaint arrives at a time of heightened scrutiny regarding the management of the Mexican healthcare system and the influence of the former president’s inner circle on public contracts.
