SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico – Residents of San Luis Potosí now have a unique opportunity to participate in the tracking of the monarch butterfly migration through a new citizen science project. Using a free mobile application, the public can help researchers monitor the species’ journey as they head toward Mexico.
For the second consecutive year, thousands of monarch butterflies have been equipped with miniature “BlūMorpho” transmitters. These tiny devices are designed to emit signals that can be detected by smartphones, allowing the public to contribute to a large-scale data collection effort.
The initiative, known as Project Monarch, is a research and citizen science project aimed at obtaining more detailed data on the migratory routes of the monarch butterfly. By involving the public, scientists hope to gain a clearer understanding of the environmental factors and geographic corridors the butterflies navigate annually.
As the migration season begins, the project invites the community to join the effort to preserve and study one of nature’s most remarkable long-distance journeys through the use of accessible technology.
