Federal and state authorities in Tamaulipas intercepted a major wildlife trafficking attempt after discovering approximately 350 live turtles hidden inside luggage at the General Servando Canales International Airport in Matamoros. The operation was launched following a routine security screening that flagged suspicious organic contents within a traveler’s baggage.

Upon inspecting the bags, security personnel and environmental authorities found hundreds of small turtles packed tightly in containers, a method frequently used by illicit wildlife smugglers to bypass inspection. The reptiles, which belong to protected local species, were immediately secured to prevent dehydration and further stress. Officials transferred the animals into the custody of environmental protection agencies for proper medical evaluation, rehabilitation, and eventual reintegration into their natural habitat.

The seizure highlights the ongoing challenge of illegal wildlife trade operating through regional transport hubs in northern Mexico. While investigations continue to identify all individuals involved in the trafficking ring, authorities reiterated their commitment to enforcing strict environmental protections and cracking down on the illegal capture and transport of native fauna.
