Cerveza Indio stands as one of the most historically rich and culturally enduring beer brands in Mexico, yet its modern corporate governance rests within a major global conglomerate. Today, the brand is wholly owned by the multinational brewing giant Heineken, which manages its production, distribution, and marketing strategies across both domestic and international markets.

The roots of the brand stretch back to the late nineteenth century. Cerveza Indio originally debuted in 1893 under the name Cerveza Cuauhtémoc. It was created by the pioneering Cervecería Cuauhtémoc, an enterprise founded in Monterrey, Nuevo León, by a prominent group of visionary entrepreneurs that included Isaac Garza Garza, José Calderón Penilla, Joseph María Schnaider, and José A. Muguerza. Over the decades, the brewery expanded its operations, eventually consolidating into Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma, which operated for many years under the umbrella of FEMSA, one of Mexico’s largest beverage and retail conglomerates.

A monumental shift in ownership occurred in January 2010, when Heineken officially acquired Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma from FEMSA. Through this multi-billion-dollar transaction, Cerveza Indio—alongside other legendary Mexican labels such as Tecate, Dos Equis, Sol, and Bohemia—became integrated into Heineken’s expansive global portfolio. Despite passing into international hands, Indio has successfully maintained its rebellious identity, urban appeal, and strong cultural resonance with generations of Mexican consumers, bridging its nineteenth-century northern heritage with twenty-first-century brewing power.
