The investigation into the murder of Melesio Cuén remains sealed until 2031

Fabrication of false evidence: The FGR determined that the gas station scene was a setup orchestrated by Sinaloa authorities. Traces of Cuén’s blood were found at the Huertos del Pedregal ranch, not at the gas station.

Obstruction of justice and cover-up: Local prosecutor’s office personnel allowed the accelerated cremation of Cuén’s body, violating basic forensic protocols for a violent homicide, which destroyed crucial evidence.

Staging: The government’s staging sought to protect the narrative of the governor of Sinaloa, who claimed to be out of the country that day, attempting to disconnect the murder from the capture of “El M4y0.” Although state prosecutor Sara Bruna was forced to resign after the fraud was exposed, no firm criminal charges have been filed for the manipulation of evidence.

Two years after the crime, the case has evolved from “fabrication” to “absolute secrecy”:

The “Cloak of Impunity”: Although the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) corrected the version of events at the scene, the criminal case remains frozen. Neither Governor Rubén Rocha Moya nor the officials involved in fabricating the evidence have been formally summoned to testify or charged.
