A 15% increase in enrollments for courses and programs, both online and in person, especially among people aged 40 to 50, was recorded at the close of the first quarter of the year: Berlitz Mexico.

In the lead-up to the celebration of International English Language Day on April 23, Berlitz Mexico reveals that this segment represents approximately 30% of its total students, establishing a trend of increased interest in learning English around age 40.

Mexico City, April 30, 2026. In the lead-up to the celebration of International English Language Day on April 23, Berlitz Mexico points out that, according to its records, with the right methodologies and consistent practice, it is entirely possible to develop proficiency in another language at any age.

To illustrate this trend, Berlitz Mexico reveals that after 148 years as a global leader in language teaching with a presence in more than 70 countries, it has registered a 15% increase in enrollments in its courses and programs this past year from people between 40 and 50 years old, both online and in person.

The spokesperson responsible for this revelation, Abigail Moreno, sales director of Berlitz Mexico, stated that of all those enrolled in Berlitz Mexico’s programs, approximately 30% are professionals over 40 years old, reflecting the growing interest of this segment in continuing to develop their skills and remain relevant in the job market. “This growth reflects both the interest and the need for people to remain competitive and better prepared in the workplace, coupled with the evolution of training programs that make learning English more accessible and flexible. These programs integrate the experience of live instructors with the support of artificial intelligence-based tools, allowing for more personalized training adapted to current times.”

Moreno asserted that, according to various studies, learning a second language in adulthood provides cognitive benefits. The research study “Multilingualism protects against accelerated aging in cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses of 27 European countries,” conducted by professionals from the Latin American Brain Health Institute (BrainLat) at Adolfo Ibáñez University (Chile), in collaboration with the Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language, and Trinity College Dublin, and published in the journal Nature Aging, concluded that multilingualism can reduce cognitive aging by up to 50%.

Regarding the motivations of senior professionals to enroll in Berlitz Mexico’s various English learning programs, Abigail Moreno highlights the following:

  1. Professional Growth
Many people reach a point in their careers where English opens doors: better positions, international projects, or working remotely with foreign companies.
  2. Adapting to a More Global World
Today, almost everything—technology, business, information—is in English. Learning it is a basic tool to avoid falling behind.
  3. Personal Interests
Traveling, reading books in their original language, or enjoying online content. An interest in something they’ve always wanted to do and now have the time or resources.
  4. Personal Development
Learning a language is a mental challenge, a way to stay active, improve memory, and prove to oneself that they can still learn new things.
  5. Family Motivations
Helping their children with school or communicating better in contexts where English is necessary.
  6. A lingering regret from the past

“I should have learned sooner.” Many people in their 40s and over revisit goals they left unfinished.

  1. Learning experience with hybrid methodology and AI

To address this desire for resilience and continuous innovation, Berlitz Mexico offers private and group classes, in-person, online with live instructors, and self-study options. A highlight is the Total Immersion® program, with intensive classes that allow professionals to learn to speak English in 1 to 2 months. This program is designed for a specific niche: people who have a job interview, a business trip, or, for example, a doctor who must attend an international conference in another country.

Berlitz Mexico has already incorporated tools such as Speaking Tutor and Speaking Industry Tutor into some of its online programs, designed for intermediate and advanced levels.

The Speaking Tutor is an AI-powered chatbot that allows you to practice real conversations adapted to the learned content, with immediate feedback, customization options such as speaking speed and avatars, with which you can practice the language using more than 10 different accents of English spoken around the world.
