Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel arrived in the Mexican capital to attend the inauguration of President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum, a ceremony that will be held on October 1.
Around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 28, the Cuban president landed at the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), where he was received by military personnel and a delegation from the Mexican government, headed by David Kershenobich, the next Secretary of Health under Sheinbaum.
Díaz-Canel plans to attend a private meal on Monday with the outgoing president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, along with the foreign leaders who attend Sheinbaum’s inauguration, who will then host a dinner that her predecessor said he would not attend.
16 international leaders have confirmed their participation in the event, most of them Latin American, as Sheinbaum announced last week.
This list includes, in addition to Lula and Petro, the presidents of Bolivia, Luis Arce; Chile, Gabriel Boric; Honduras, Xiomara Castro; Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader; Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo, and Paraguay, Santiago Peña.
From the Caribbean region, the presidents of Belize, Saint Lucia, Dominica, and Haiti will also attend, while from Africa, the presidents of Ghana and Libya have also announced their presence.
In addition, representatives from up to 105 countries and 22 international organizations will attend, among which the presence of the American first lady, Jill Biden, stands out, who will lead the delegation from the North American country.
Also causing controversy this week was Sheinbaum’s decision not to invite King Felipe VI of Spain because the monarch did not respond to a letter sent to him by López Obrador in March 2019 asking him to recognize the abuses committed by the Spanish against the indigenous peoples of Mexico during the conquest, and which has caused the Spanish government to announce that it will not send any representative in protest.
