Border patrol seizes more than $1 million in cocaine hidden in SUV ceiling

INDIO, CALIFORNIA. — The U.S. Border Patrol announced two people were arrested on Monday after they were caught trying to smuggle more than a million dollars worth of cocaine into the country.

Agents assigned to the El Centro Sector arrested the two U.S. citizens around 3:00 p.m. at an immigration checkpoint along Highway 86.

During an inspection of their SUV, a Border Patrol K-9 alerted agents to the presence of hidden people or hidden drugs.

Agents recovered 34 packages in a hidden compartment in the ceiling of the SUV.

The packages tested positive for cocaine with an estimated value of more than $1.04 million.

“It’s way too hot for this type of ‘snow’ in the El Centro Sector,” said Chief Patrol Agent Gregory Bovino. “Indio Station agents melted down plans to bring this poison to drug users in America, and I applaud those agents for bringing the fight to bad people and bad things here in the Premier Sector.”

The vehicle, drugs, and driver were turned over to the Imperial Valley Border Enforcement Security Task Force for further processing and investigation.
