According to the Russian news agency TASS, the invitation to the Russian president was confirmed by the Mexican Embassy in Moscow.
Claudia Sheinbaum, virtual president-elect, invited Vladimir Putin, president of Russia, to her inauguration that will take place on October 1. This despite the situation in Eastern Europe, where the Russian army has maintained an offensive against Ukraine since February 2022.
According to information from the Tass agency, which is originally from Russia, Vladimir Putin is one of the guests at the “investiture” of the new Mexican president. “The Russian president will make a decision whether he will participate in the ceremony himself or appoint another high-ranking official,” it says.
The Russian Embassy in Mexico received the invitation, with the purpose of the Russian president taking part in the inauguration, where President Andrés Manuel López Obrador will hand over the presidential sash to Sheinbaum, who will be the first female president in the history of Mexico.
For now, the authorities of the Russian Federation have not issued a position on the matter, on whether Putin will make the trip to Mexican territory or appoint one of his officials. Likewise, the Mexican Foreign Ministry has not offered further details about this invitation to the Russian president.
Claudia Sheinbaum announced that representatives of nations such as Ecuador and Peru will not be invited, due to the existing tension in diplomatic relations with both nations. She added that she agrees with the policy that has been in place in the López Obrador administration.
