Mazatlán, Sinaloa.- Mazatlán has already begun to prepare for the start of the 2024 hurricane and rain season and now the mayor himself confirmed that the city is very vulnerable to the impact of these meteorological phenomena.
After the Fourth Coordination Meeting against rains and tropical cyclones that was held on March 7 at the Government Palace, Édgar González Zataráin, the municipal president of Mazatlán, gave an example of the disaster caused by Hurricane ‘Otis’ in Acapulco, It was determined that Mazatlán is even more susceptible than Acapulco to suffering damage due to the lack of parameters in the constructions.
“It made us think and, what we have been saying, Mazatlán, I don’t know how much more vulnerable than Acapulco, but we are very vulnerable, not only in the type of construction that we have, that we don’t even have a standard or a parameter that “it guarantees that the crystals, that the way it is built guarantees you.”
And during the meeting, chaired by the national coordinator of Civil Protection, Laura Velázquez Alzúa, the minute by minute detail was given of how the hurricane that caused serious damage in Acapulco, and in Mazatlán, was formed in a matter of hours. Recommendations were taken to improve the shelters and more details necessary for any situation that may arise this season.
In addition, the mayor of Mazatlán accepted that the fact that the port is more vulnerable than Acapulco is an issue that is of great concern, which is why they will be coordinated with Civil Protection and other authorities to monitor hurricanes that occur in the Pacific during this 2024.
