Over the years, the city of San Cristóbal de Las Casas has faced a persistent problem related to the disappearance of garbage containers in its streets. Although containers had been installed to facilitate the proper disposal of waste, many of them have been stolen or vandalized, leaving the city with a lack of garbage management options.
In the historic center of the city, an area that attracts thousands of citizens and tourists, some garbage containers have been installed, while in other areas they are still missing. The situation has become challenging as installed containers are often targets of vandalism, leading to their destruction or theft.
Problems associated with a lack of garbage containers include the accumulation of garbage on streets and corners, which not only affects the appearance of the city, but can also lead to health and environmental problems. Stray animals often tear garbage bags during the night, scattering waste on public roads.
Cleaning and civil protection personnel have urged citizens not to take garbage onto the streets, especially during the rainy season, as the rains can wash waste into the city’s rivers, which can cause flooding. However, it appears that some residents have not followed these recommendations, further exacerbating the problem.
Josué Valdez, a resident of San Cristóbal, expressed his concern about the situation and highlighted the importance of taking care of the containers to prevent their theft or vandalism. He also called for greater surveillance in the areas where the containers are placed. Container theft not only affects the efficiency of garbage collection, but also has a negative impact on the city’s image.
“It is necessary that the containers be taken care of so that gangsters do not steal them. In addition, people get used to taking out their garbage in the streets and this causes flooding or the dogs tear the bags in the early morning, and that there is also surveillance, because the vandals steal it in the early morning and then the next day they sell it as old iron,” he said.
