Matamoros, Tamaulipas. – The new wave of migrants traveling from southern Mexico to the border could stay in Piedras Negras and Ciudad Juárez, because they are doing it aboard the “beast” and it has no destination towards the Tamaulipas border, assured the director of the Tamaulipas Institute for Migrants (ITM), Juan José Rodríguez Alvarado.

He stated that this community has been traveling by train because it does not have a cost for them, but to reach the border of Tamaulipas there is no this type of transportation, which is why it is estimated that this impact would not be received regarding the arrival of more migrants.

He stressed that even so, we will have to be very attentive to this behavior, since when they arrive at their destinations and see that the spaces are very saturated, they may decide to travel to these borders and they will have to be prepared to care for this new population.

He assured that there is the capacity to care for this community, as is the case of Matamoros where a shelter was opened and is being expanded precisely to be able to have a greater capacity to care for this floating population that continues to arrive.

He stated that currently in Tamaulipas there are around 9 thousand migrants, this between Reynosa, Nuevo Laredo and Matamoros, but where there is the most population with these characteristics is in the first city mentioned, there must be around 6 thousand or a little more.

Rodríguez Alvarado specified that it is expected that of the amount of this population that is estimated to travel on the “beast” if they arrive in Tamaulipas, it will be a minimal part, considering that this means of transportation goes to other destinations and is where they will be arriving seeking to reach the United States.
