Due to climate change, the Yucatecan capital has become more susceptible to drought, extreme temperatures and floods due to atypical rainfall or the impact of meteorological phenomena, as revealed by Alejandra Bolio Rojas, director of the Sustainable Development Unit (UDS) of the municipality.
The municipal official highlighted that this information was provided by the municipality’s Risk Atlas, a document that, through a methodology, helps to recognize and identify the risks in the city, which in turn allows the creation of intervention plans, public policy planning, and specific actions.
“The territory is susceptible to flooding when there is atypical rainfall or due to the impact of meteorological phenomena. We are susceptible to drought and high temperatures, which generate an impact on health and what we are looking for is to support the actions that allow us to reduce those risks”, indicated the municipal official.
He pointed out that in order to have a better overview of climate change, they are currently working on updating the document, for which the UDS is collaborating with a group of experts, which will allow them to create adaptation strategies and thus the programs can be implemented despite to the risks to which the municipality is susceptible.
He indicated that this year the drought complicated the city’s tree planting program, an indicator that will help manage environmental policies, as well as encourage companies to implement actions to generate green energy and reduce energy consumption, as well as better management of waste.
