According to the Ministry of Culture of Zacatecas, this tradition represents the triumph of good over evil, but over the years the Devil was replaced with recognized and not so loved characters (this year, Lopez Obrador was the chosen one).

Hundreds of parishioners gathered this Glory Saturday in the Barrio del Artista, the historic center of Puebla, to witness the traditional representation of the “Burning of Judas Iscariot.”

The organizers hung eight life-size figures, which refer to politicians, artists, and other “recognized” characters, made of reed frames or sticks, tissue paper, and fireworks. This is with the aim of recreating the passage from the Bible, where Judas hangs himself on a tree after betraying Jesus.

The most curious thing is that, among the hanging stick figures, there was a Devil that had the name of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador written on it. However, the figures of former presidents Vicente Fox (2000-2006), Ernesto Zedillo (1994-2000) and Felipe Calderón (2006-2012) were also present.

In addition to Lopez Obrador, other “judas” with the names of the governor of Puebla, Sergio Salomón; the mayor of the city of Zacatecas, Eduardo Rivera Pérez, from the “Va por México” coalition; and Lily Téllez, senator of the National Action Party (PAN).
