Marcelo Ebrard, Foreign Minister of Mexico, announced this Friday that, after negotiations with the United States at the X Summit of North American Leaders held this week, more than a million Mexican residents there will receive US citizenship this year.

The Summit has highlighted very significant things, (…), that one million 250 thousand Mexicans living in the United States will be able to access US citizenship in 2023. We are going to do it together with the Government of the United States, it is good news for our community,” he said in statements to the media.

The announcement is related to one of the points that Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Mexican president, asked Joe Biden, his American counterpart, in the message to the media after the trilateral meeting on Tuesday, January 10th, between the two leaders and Justin Trudeau, Canadian prime minister.

López Obrador asked Biden to insist before the US Congress to approve an immigration reform that regularizes the almost 11 million undocumented people living in the United States, of whom almost half are of Mexican origin.

This is one of the main requests that the Mexican has made so far in the Biden administration.

“I have respectfully asked President Biden to insist (on immigration reform), and I know that it is not a simple matter, but it is fair, and that is why I am raising it, and I also have full confidence in President Biden,” he declared after the meeting held at the National Palace.
