Mitla is the second-most important archeological site in the state of Oaxaca in Mexico and the most important of the Zapotec culture.

The site is located 44 km from the city of Oaxaca, in the upper end of the Tlacolula Valley, one of the three cold, high valleys that form the Central Valleys Region of the state.

Located in the state of Oaxaca, Yagul and Mitla are some of the most impressive archaeological sites in Mexico and can be traced to the Zapotec civilization. Vacationers will find the ruins from that period.

After the breakdown of the Zapotec capital, Monte Alban, in 700AD, Mitla became the most significant city.

It is the first spot where North America’s farming occurred. Traces of hunters and gathers from 8000 to 6500 BC can still be seen in Guila Naquitz, one of the caves.

Don’t miss the Hall of the Columns, one of the most popular historic buildings in the area.
