Tourists and local people escaped unharmed from a large fire that raged in an area of hotels and guest houses on the island of Holbox, in the state of Quintana Roo, at the tip of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, Mexican officials said on Tuesday, November 29th.

Authorities said some tourists lost their documents to the blaze.

Video from the scene showed some firefighters from a neighboring municipality using buckets of water to try to douse the flames.

The governor of Quintana Roo state said nobody was injured in the blaze. But Gov. Mara Lezama pledged to build a fire station on the island, noting it had depended on help from other municipalities to put out the blaze.

She said consular officials were helping tourists with emergency travel documents.
