MÉRIDA, Yucatán.— Once again, the free highway to Cancún became the scene of a traffic accident in which one person lost his life.

Early this Tuesday, a man died charred in the cabin of a truck that caught fire after colliding with the base of a reading arch of the Ministry of Public Security.

The accident occurred at kilometer 65 of the federal highway around 2 in the morning. The authorities continue to work on the scene, so a part of the road is closed to traffic.

According to the information collected, the trailer is owned by the Potosinos transport company; The driver has not yet been identified, however, it was found out that he was nicknamed “El lord”.

Traffic on the Mérida-Cancún freeway was affected for five hours, from 3 to 8 in the morning. The accident in which the trailer driver lost his life occurred 5 kilometers before Kantunil.

The family, presumably from Mérida, was traveling in a silver Honda CRV van bound for the tourist destination, but for reasons not yet determined, the driver lost control of the vehicle and left the Mérida-Cancún highway, near kilometer 111 , to finish his erratic race crashing into a tree.

The parents of the minors, a 7-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy, died at the scene. The injured were taken to Piste and Valladolid for medical care, but due to the seriousness of their injuries, they were taken to Mérida in one of the helicopters of the Ministry of Public Security (SSP).
