The shortage of diesel that is beginning to be seen in the world is something that affects Mexico significantly, this is due to an increase in demand and the little supply that has raised prices.

The commissioner of the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE), Guillermo Pineda Bernal, asked the gas station businessmen not to lower their arms.

In a keynote conference organized by the Mexican Association of Service Station Providers (Ampes), the commissioner indicated that the shortage of diesel is already reflected in consumption in Mexico.

Pineda Bernal specified that the shortage of diesel is a global problem but that Mexico must take into account that inventories of this fuel and oil in the United States stood at 105 million barrels in May 2022, the lowest since 2008.

According to figures from Pemex, domestic demand for diesel averages more than 240,000 barrels per day, of which half is imported.

The manager pointed out that low production in refineries and lower oil exports from Russia and low inventories in the United States are causing diesel to have a crisis because demand is increasing just like before the pandemic.

The CRE commissioner also highlighted the fact that Pemex has increased its imports of gasoline and diesel, but that of private companies has fallen, the latter due to a lower number of permits.

Pemex gasoline imports rose 6% in May this year and private imports fell 34.4% compared to the same month in 2021.

While Pemex diesel imports increased 31%, those of private companies decreased 26%.
