Mexico’s Veracruz port authority (Asipona) launched two tenders for works in its northern bay area.

The tenders also suggest progress on the port’s expansion, which reportedly suffered delays in February.

One tender is for works to complete a dock that will be part of an existing mineral bulk terminal and the other concerns the executive project for the construction of extra access in the area, according to records on procurement site Compranet.

For the dock project, Asipona will receive bids on June 30 and award the construction contract on July 7. Works should take 150 days and start July 21.

Meanwhile, work on the access is expected to start on June 22 and demand 780,000 pesos (US$39,000).

The former government planned to use the area for five new terminals

Contract awarded

In related news, at the end of May Asipona awarded a 1.5mn-peso contract to Lucero Del Carmen Polito Robles to carry out the executive project for installing power networks for the medium voltage, voice and data electrical system, and lighting system for the facilities of the bay’s satellite and mixed cargo terminals.

Works kicked off on June 14 and are expected to last 75 days, according to the procurement documents.

About the Bay area

Port expansion involving 31bn pesos stopped in 2019.

The New Veracruz port, managed by Apiver, has five terminals and a cargo handling capacity of 95Mt, compared to 23Mt previously, according to the port authority’s website.

But the project was never finished, and the government has allocated 1.2bn pesos to the project this year to continue construction, according to the approved 2022 federal spending budget.

It also detailed that some 21bn pesos went to the project in previous years.

According to El Economista, the works will expand the port’s water area by 500ha and the land area by 450 hectares.
