Mexico implements new verification standards, What cars will have to go for inspections?

The Official Mexican Standard indicates which cars will be part of the new vehicular verification with inspection of the physical-mechanical conditions.

The review of the physical and mechanical conditions of a vehicle is a common practice in different countries of the world and its objective is to ensure that cars in circulation maintain the necessary safety conditions in order to reduce accidents. This was announced by the Ministry of the Interior, through the Official Gazette of the Federation, after announcing the new verification standard.

The Official Mexican Standard,  NOM-236-SE-2021, named “Motor vehicles-Physicomechanical conditions of vehicles with gross vehicle weight not exceeding 3,857 kg”, implies that certain cars must undergo a new verification that will consist of a technical inspection that will evaluate their conditions to circulate safely in the national territory.

Which cars fall within this new Standard.

Cars that enter the new verification

This new Mexican Official Standard will be applicable to all those vehicles with a gross weight that does not exceed 3,857 kilograms, but with a weight greater than 400 kilos, this being the acceptable range to circulate under safe conditions in Mexico,  according to the established criteria.
 
In addition to those cars weighing less than 400 kilograms, those vehicles intended for use in mountainous or desert terrain, beach areas and railways will also be exempt; registered as cars classics; associated with dedicated machinery for the construction and mining industries; those that circulate exclusively on confined roads such as race tracks, airports, go-kart tracks, or other similar transport.
 
Those vehicles that are regulated by NOM-068-SCT-2-2014 are also excepted, such as: land transport -federal passenger transport service, tourism, cargo, its ancillary services and private transport -physical, mechanical and safety conditions for the operation. in general communication routes of federal jurisdiction.

How will the new vehicle verification be applied?

All those vehicles that require undergoing a technical inspection to determine their physical and mechanical conditions will be classified as follows:
 
1.  Private transportation vehicles.  4 years after the date of its sale as a new vehicle, and thereafter, every 2 years until year 9.

2.  Private transportation vehicles that are 10 or more years old after the date of their commercialization as a new vehicle. Every year.

3.  Vehicles of intensive use. One year after the date of sale as a new vehicle and every year thereafter.
 
On the other hand, the technical inspection of the vehicles will take into account the following elements:
 
Exterior conditioning. Body and chassis; doors and chest; windshield and windows; windshield wipers and washers; indirect vision (mirrors and/or cameras); and external auxiliary tire support.

Interior fittings. Seats and their anchorages; safety belts and their anchorages; speedometer and horn.
 
Lighting system. Headlights; reverse light; turn signal and warning lights (flashing); brake and license plate light (rear plate); position lights (quarters;) and identification.
 
Direction system. Wheel Alignment; steering wheel and column; address box; arms, bars and ball joints; and power steering (power steering).
 
Suspension system. axles and tension bars; wheels or rims; wheels or tires; springs, shock mounts and springs; suspension efficiency; torsion and stabilizer bar; suspension arms, forks and ball joints.
 
Engine and transmission. The general condition of the engine; battery and electrical system; engine power system; exhaust system and transmission condition.

Vehicles that use gas for fuel. Fixed deposits and pipes.
