Playa Del Carmen. An explosion at the Kool beach club, located in Playa del Carmen, left a preliminary figure of 2 dead and 21 injured (four of them foreigners and 17 nationals). The deceased were workers of the establishment.
The Secretariat of Civil Protection, Risk Prevention and Firefighters of Solidaridad reported that at approximately 1:00 p.m. this Monday, a gas tank exploded in the kitchen area of the beach club and caused the walls and ceiling of the area to fall, which crushed several people.
An Oxxo store adjacent to the beach club also suffered structural damage and a palapa caught fire. Kool is located on 28th Street with the Federal Maritime Zone, in front of Mamita’s Beach Club.
Rescue and security bodies, including the Municipal Police, Fire Department, Army, National Guard, and experts from the State Attorney General’s Office made an appearance to cordon off the area and rescue the victims; some were rescued from the rubble and taken to various hospitals, while others walked out on their own.
The general hospital of Playa del Carmen reports that it treats four people for this fact. The Municipal Health Directorate and paramedics from Costamed and Hospiten transferred 19 of the 21 people who were injured to the general hospital and other clinics, since the rest did not need second-level medical care.
The Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office reported that it began an investigation folder for the gas leak explosion. For his part, the secretary of Public Security of the state, Lucio Hernández Gutiérrez, highlighted on his social networks that “emergency services coordinated by C5 attend to the explosion of a gas tank in the kitchen of the Kool restaurant in Playa del Carmen, information in process”.
In a press conference at the scene, the municipal president Lili Campos confirmed the number of injured and that they are receiving the corresponding medical care. She mentioned that she hopes that in the next few hours they will receive a report on what the injured people require and the list of names.
For now, he published on his social networks that “those injured in the mishap at the Kool Beach restaurant are being treated at different hospitals in the municipality, if you want to find a family member or friend you can contact the phones: Playamed, 984 222 8250; Sesa Playa del Carmen, 984 206 1690; and IMSS, 984 803 0266”.
He indicated that the Prosecutor’s Office will carry out the corresponding investigations and in matters of Civil Protection, the municipality will be stricter with its revisions because the safety of the workers and visitors of these establishments is at stake. In the case of Kool, they will check if your permissions are in order.
Prosecutor’s Report
Hours later, the Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office announced that the two victims who lost their lives had already been identified. They are male and respond to the initials AMC and AHH, both were restaurant workers.
According to his report, until 6:00 p.m. on Monday, of the people transferred to hospitals, eight have been discharged and the rest are under evaluation. Fifteen of the injured people are collaborators of the commercial establishment.
