The arrival of sargassum to the coasts of Quintana Roo has municipalities and state coordinating efforts

Playa del Carmen.- To strengthen and advance in the strategies of attention to the arrival of sargassum and keep the beaches clean for as long as possible, the third session of the General Council for the Integral Sustainable Management of Sargassum was held at the College of Engineers Civilians of the municipality of Solidaridad and the College of Architects of the Riviera Maya.

The Secretary of Ecology and Environment (SEMA) Efraín Villanueva Arcos, in his capacity as general coordinator of the Sargasso de Quintana Roo Technical Advisory Council, expressed that Governor Carlos Joaquín continues with the firm conviction of joining forces with the federation and municipalities to attend to the arrival of sargassum to the coasts of the entity.

Before the Technical Council, made up of businessmen from Tulum and the Riviera Maya, Villanueva Arcos reported that the state government, they are promoting the allocation of specific properties so that the sargassum that is collected at sea can reach a place safely, prepared for treatment and drying. It is being managed, both with the outgoing municipal presidents and with those who are taking office.

In the case of Tulum – Villanueva emphasized – the rehabilitation of a compactor is being managed that will allow bales to be made so that there is better waste management in the Tulum landfill. They are also working on solutions for the case of Solidarity.

Villanueva Arcos explained that a working group was established with SEMARNAT and with other federal authorities such as INAPESCA to resolve the issue of permits for companies interested in promoting the use of sargassum.

Through SEMA, additional funds are being sought from the federal and state budget for the care of sargassum, as are possible donations and the participation of international organizations.

The Ecology official specified that there is a rapprochement with the Inter-American Development Bank. They have some experiences that are being carried out in the Dominican Republic with efficient results from various types of barriers.

The session was attended by Rear Admiral of the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) Alejandro López Zenteno, coordinator of the National Anti-Sargasso Strategy, the president of the Riviera Maya Hotel Association Toni Chaves, the president of the Riviera Maya Business Coordinating Council Lenin Amaro Betancourt, Laura Patiño from the Technical Council and authorities from the three levels of government.
