Mexico will co-produce semiconductors with the United States and, for this, the Secretary of Economy, Tatiana Clouthier, will meet this week with several interested companies in Washington, DC.

In this regard, the Mexican government has talked with its US counterpart about the production in Mexico of “an important part” of semiconductors and software in that same industry.

At the same time, both governments hold conversations about how much Regional Content Value would be assigned to Mexico in these projects for compliance with the rules of origin in the Agreement between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC).

The investment boost in this industry occurs after the high demand for electronic equipment and network connectivity worldwide caused by the Covid-19 pandemic led, in turn, to a shortage of semiconductor chips for the automotive industry.

In parallel, the US government modified the rules to restrict Huawei’s ability to contract semiconductor chips from facilities abroad that use US technology, such as the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).
