Cozumel, Q.R. — The navy training ship Cuauhtémoc set sail from the island of Cozumel Thursday for its final destination of Dubai. Cozumel mayor Pedro Joaquín Delbouis was on board the vessel prior to its departure.
On Thursday morning, the 250 Cuauhtémoc crew left Cozumel and set sail for Norfolk, Virginia as their first stop.
“From Cozumel, with the spirit of hundreds of sailors, we witnessed the goodbye and the fulfillment of the mission of the training cruise, which was postponed due to the pandemic.”
“But now, weathering storms, the training ship will keep the course to safe harbor, carrying the message of peace and goodwill to other countries,” said the Commander of the Fifth Naval Region, Vice Admiral Javier Abarca García in his farewell message.
The Cuauhtémoc Sailing School Ship is the flagship of the Mexican Navy “and allows Mexico to transmit messages of friendship and goodwill in the ports and seas of the world,” Joaquin stated.
The Cuauhtémoc arrived in Cozumel on August 30. Over the course of a few days, its crew, made up of 250 cadets and officers, carried out various activities including history talks given by personnel from the Mexican Navy detachment on the island and details of the tourist attractions of Cozumel. They also carried out activities in the Atlantis submarine and visited Chankanaab Park.
The vessel will begin its journey to Dubai on October 1 for the start of the Dubai 2020 Expo, which begins October 20. The ship will leave Dubai March 31 of 2022.
Dubai Expo 2020, which was postponed due to the pandemic, is about themes of opportunity, mobility and sustainability that is meant to inspire visitors to preserve and protect the planet, explore new frontiers and build a better future for everyone.
