According to the statements of the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Mexico seeks to re-establish diplomatic relations with North Korea.

During his stay at the UN Security Council in New York, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard revealed that the Mexican government is working to reopen the diplomatic and commercial relationship with North Korea, a country headed by dictator Kim Jong Un.

” We have an open position regarding relations with any country in the world, and we are working to reopen embassies in each country and to open trade and activities between our countries,” replied the foreign minister when asked about the Asian country.

“We have a position of non-intervention throughout the world, we respect all governments, and we want to reopen the relationship with North Korea as well, like any other country,” he added in his reply.

However, Marcelo Ebrard also claimed that North Korea had committed flagrant violations of international law and United Nations Security Council resolutions by conducting nuclear tests and launching missiles with long-range ballistic technology.

The Presidency of the Republic issued a decree that was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation, instructing Mexican government agencies to fully comply with the resolutions of the UN Security Council on North Korea.

On the other hand, during the press conference, Foreign Minister Ebrard stressed Mexico’s rejection of the economic blockade against Cuba.

“Still in January of this year it was voted here in this assembly of the United Nations, that the blockade by 184 countries had to be lifted; it is a global consensus ”, he commented.

He also pointed out that the flight of the Mexican Air Force plane to Cuba, which was reported yesterday, was due to the return of a group of 92 doctors and nurses from the Island who supported the health services of Mexico, specifically in the eastern part of Mexico City, due to the increase in cases due to the global pandemic.

During the six-year term of Enrique Peña Nieto, during the month of September 2017, Mexico broke its relationship with the Kim Jong-un government by declaring the North Korean ambassador, Kim Hyong Gil, a person not welcome. At that time the Ministry of Foreign Relations was under the command of Luis Videgaray.

After expelling Ambassador Kim Hyong Gil from the country, Mexico expressed to the North Korean government its “ absolute rejection of its nuclear activity, which represents a frank and growing violation of international law and represents a serious threat to the Asian region and to the world. ”.

” Its nuclear activity is a serious risk to international peace and security, and represents a growing threat to the nations of the region, including fundamental allies such as Japan and South Korea,” they reported through a decree published through the Official Journal of the Federation.

The rupture of the Mexican government with the North Korean government occurred while Mexico was renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement ( NAFTA ), with the United States and Canada.
