The plan is part of the public policies promoted by the local government as a strategy to strengthen the sector and promote economic reactivation.

During the presentation of the first Academic Forum of Alternative Tourism, the local Tourism Secretary, José Antonio Nieves, reiterated the commitment of the governor, Adán Augusto López Hernández, to comply with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030 and take advantage of the economic reactivation of the region with the momentum generated by the Mayan Train.

The secretary announced the Ríos Mayas project as part of the public policies promoted by López Hernández as a strategy to strengthen tourism and in turn promote economic reactivation in a tourist route that will include three logistics centers such as Tenosique, Centla, and Villahermosa.

This will be located in Boca del Cerro, between Alto and Bajo Usumacinta, as a program that will run in conjunction with the Mayan Train. The project intends to use one of the largest tourist resources in the state of Tabasco: its rivers.

It should be noted that upstream is the Usumacinta Canyon with sections of rapids, which are ideal for adventure tourism, and downstream to connect with the municipalities of Balancán, Emiliano Zapata, Jonuta, and Centla until the river flows into the Gulf of Mexico.

The Ríos Mayas project is a purpose of integrated tourism development with an inclusive, innovative, sustainable, and territorially ordered orientation that aims to attract and encourage investment, promote balanced economic and social development.

In addition, it seeks to promote tourism spending and its better distribution, motivating the creation of new sources of employment and self-employment for the local population, with the vision of contributing to the 2030 SDGs, taking advantage of the momentum generated by the Mayan Train.

Cultural development

According to the Ministry of Tourism, the project is based on two major concepts or axes of natural and cultural development, where both heritages are used for tourism, where there is controlled tourism to avoid environmental alteration, sustainability is promoted in all its facets and events are held on the river.

On the cultural issue, the objectives are to promote the Ríos Mayas tourism brand, promote cultural events, take advantage of historical buildings such as archaeological sites to form cultural areas and make the population aware of the contribution of tourism, having as long-term goals the consolidation of the project as a natural and cultural destination with highly differentiated, iconic and complementary products.

Nieves Rodríguez pointed out that this project will allow the sector to detonate, promote and enhance the social and economic development of that area and its inhabitants.

Tenosique is one of the points where the Maya Train will make a stop, so an analysis of the place is necessary to decide where the station will be located, which will connect it with the route of Campeche, Chiapas, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo.

The project seeks to promote the integration of the tourist corridors of the region, in order to form a tourist route so that visitors can visit archaeological zones, ranches, and other attractions of those municipalities.

Ríos Mayas will promote a network made up of seven small routes and multiple micro routes, in order to detonate three multimodal logistics centers and tourist distributors located in Tenosique, Centla, and Villahermosa and at least five other sub-centers.

It was indicated that sustainable productive activities will be encouraged, to offer travelers unique and innovative tourism products that will attract tourists and investors who generate new projects that protect the environment and contribute to the economic development of the region.

“If something distinguishes Tabasco as a tourist attraction from the rest of the country, it is its rivers, the region of rivers has a high potential for tourism development. The project presented has a great future and a lot of investment potential, ”said the state official.

In the medium term, it is intended to diversify development with sustainable products and unique distinctive elements of accommodation, recreation, production, commerce, and recreation, while, in the short term, for this year the purpose is to position Ríos Mayas as a natural destination and experiential culture, based on actions and projects of high impact and attractive for investment.
