Compostela or Villa de Santiago de Galicia de Compostela de Indias is one of the most emblematic towns in Nayarit. This town was founded by the conqueror Cristóbal de Oñate in 1540.

During the pre-Hispanic period, the town was called Cactlán, which means “a place where snakes abound”. Its current name was put in honor of the Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela.

Before the arrival of the colonizers, Compostela was part of the dominion of Xalisco, which covered a large part of the Bajío. The current valley of Compostela was inhabited by indigenous Cacnos and Tepehuanos.
