Mapimí, Durango: A “Pueblo Mágico” in the middle of the desert

736

Mapimí was the first Pueblo Mágico in Durango, and its name means “high hill”. It’s less than 300km away from the capital of the state.

It has more than 400 years of history and was part of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, the trade route along which silver was transported in the New Spain.

At the end of the 19th Century, the mines around Ojuela were exploited by the Spanish. The mines became among the most important in Mexico, until they flooded in 1932.

Another natural wonder of Mapimí is the El Rosario Caves, which are 25km away from the town.

There we hiked and learned that the caves were discovered by miners who were working in the region.

The agency Tour Mapimí Ojuela made this tour possible.
