MÉRIDA.- The Mayan Train will cross half the city of Mérida through an underground tunnel that will go from the exit to the Mérida-Cancún highway to the La Plancha area.

The tunnel will travel several kilometers below the Yucatecan capital, with the aim of not affecting citizenship or roads and at the same time connecting with the center of Merida.

This announcement was made known by Rogelio Jiménez Pons, director of the National Fund for Tourism Promotion (Fonatur), who said the train will be at a depth of 6.5 meters from the floor level, in addition to entering the Merida-Cancun highway, about 4 kilometers from the city.

From there, the tunnel would begin until reaching the old train station and then leave the city through the south zone, until the next stop that would be in Umán.

On the technical possibilities of conducting the tunnel, the federal official said that the project is viable, since “the rock (from the subsoil of Mérida) is not so hard, vertical cuts can be made and it does not collapse, it is stable.”

This decision was taken not to affect citizenship, according to the announcement of Jiménez Pons that was made during the forum: Importance of Energy for Commerce, Services, Tourism and Industry, organized by Concanaco.
