Transport Sector Protest: Truckers Block Tamaulipas Highway Demanding Security Reforms

- October 28, 2026

Cargo transport operators in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, joined a nationwide strike on Monday, blocking a key highway to demand government intervention regarding security and infrastructure issues within the logistics industry.

The protest, involving members of four major transport organizations—the National Chamber of Cargo Transport (CANACAR), the Honorable Mexican Alliance of Transportist Organizations (HAMOTAC), the Mexico-American Federation of Transportists (FEMATRAC), and the Integrative Organization of Conventional Rights (INDECO)—is part of a larger national mobilization. The group has concentrated its fleet at kilometer 17 of the national highway to pressure authorities for concrete solutions to the sector’s growing challenges.

The transport unions are primarily demanding reinforced security on federal roads to combat cargo theft, robberies, extortion, and “piso” (protection money) payments. They are also calling for significant improvements to road infrastructure across the country.

In addition to security concerns, the operators are requesting a review of exorbitant towing costs and a reduction in “over-regulation.” They are also expressing concern over planned changes to tax incentives for the transport sector scheduled for 2027, which the unions argue could significantly increase operating expenses for logistics companies.

The organizing bodies have declared the strike indefinite, calling for federal authorities to establish formal agreements to address their grievances. While the concentration in Nuevo Laredo highlights the friction within a strategic sector for national and international commerce, officials have not yet confirmed the specific duration of the local blockade or the extent of additional traffic disruptions.
