Plot to Assassinate Nayarit Governor Linked to CJNG Operatives and DEA Fugitives

- October 28, 2026

The investigation into a possible assassination plot against the Governor of Nayarit has taken a dark turn as authorities link the brothers known as the “”Tavolos”” to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the DEA’s most-wanted list.

Jorge Octavio García Calderón, known as “”Tavo”” or “”El Talibán,”” is a fugitive on the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) list for heroin trafficking and money laundering. His last known address was in Ixtlán del Río, Nayarit. While state authorities presume his death, his brother, identified only as “”Talibán II,”” was recently captured, providing a wealth of evidence regarding a coordinated hit on Governor Miguel Ángel Navarro Quintero.

During the arrest of Talibán II, investigators seized five mobile phones containing chilling messages. According to State Prosecutor Elvia Ludmila Heredia Verdugo, the devices contained flight numbers, schedules, and names of individuals intended to board aircraft. These revelations gained prominence following the crash of a Cessna Citation I/SP 501 on October 4. The aircraft, which the governor frequently used, vanished from radar during a return flight to Tepic, resulting in the deaths of the pilot and co-pilot.

While the Prosecutor is not ruling out the crash as an accident, she noted that the investigation into the “”Talibán”” brothers points toward a deliberate plot. The brothers were allegedly operating as operators for the CJNG. The Prosecutor revealed that they were being monitored as part of a plot to intercept the Governor and herself on the highway to Compostela. Authorities identified that ten people were detained in connection with this specific plan.

The investigation also links these individuals to broader criminal activities. The bodies of two lawyers, associated with a CJNG leader, were found in the same area where the brothers were last seen. Furthermore, the “Tavolo” brothers had been the subject of “narcomantas” (banners) since August, which accused the Governor and the Prosecutor of corruption and threatened them with violence.

The DEA describes García Calderón as a dangerous fugitive, noting his involvement in conspiracy to distribute heroin and money laundering. While the state has issued notices regarding his whereabouts, the presence of the brothers in the region highlights the volatile intersection of organized crime, high-level political targets, and the ongoing struggle for security in Nayarit.
