Yucatán Authorities Link Two Men to Aggravated Extortion Ring in Mérida

- October 28, 2026

MÉRIDA, MEXICO – The State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) of Yucatán has formally linked Erick Alejandro G.G. to the crime of aggravated extortion following a series of fraudulent schemes targeting properties and employees in northern Mérida.

According to the judicial file (cause 448/2026), Erick Alejandro allegedly operated in tandem with Alexis de Dios C., who has also been processed for the same crime. The duo specialized in impersonating property owners to manipulate workers into handing over valuables.

Modus Operandi: Deception via WhatsApp and Phone Calls

Investigators revealed that the suspects utilized a combination of phone calls to landlines and WhatsApp messages to deceive victims. In one instance on July 27, 2026, in the San Ramón neighborhood, the suspects tricked an employee into entering a room and providing instructions to withdraw cash and deposit it at a nearby commercial plaza.

A second operation took place in the Montebello development, where the suspects successfully convinced a security guard to open a safe. From the safe, they stole Mexican pesos, foreign currency, and various pieces of jewelry.

In a sophisticated logistics move, the suspects instructed the worker to place the stolen items in a backpack and hand them over to a platform taxi driver. The driver then transported the loot to a sub-commissioner’s office in Susulá, from where it was moved to a property in Chalmuch.

Legal Proceedings and Detention

The FGE reported that Erick Alejandro was linked to the process during a hearing at the Second Control Court of the First Judicial District. The presiding judge granted a three-month period to complete the complementary investigation.

Alexis de Dios was previously processed for the same crime in August. Both defendants remain in preventive detention as they face trial for the aggravated extortion crimes.
