Baja California Estimates $8-$10 Fee for New San Ysidro Pedestrian Crossing

- October 14, 2026

Tijuana, Baja California — Authorities in Baja California have revealed that the upcoming pedestrian crossing at the San Ysidro gate, which will utilize the Cross Border Xpress (CBX) terminal, is expected to cost between $8 and $10 USD per use.

Kurt Honold Morales, Secretary of Economy and Innovation for Baja California, stated that the revenue generated from these fees will be allocated to cover the salaries of border agents on both sides of the frontier, as well as the operational costs of the new crossing facilities.

“The estimated price—which is not yet finalized—is between $8 and $10. This will represent a more economical cost compared to using the ‘Fast Lane’ vehicle crossing lanes,” Honold Morales explained.

The project is specifically designed to serve frequent crossers, including the approximately 90,000 cross-border workers who travel daily between Baja California and California.

Transparent Permit System and Advanced Technology

Honold Morales noted that the state aims to implement a permit sales scheme similar to the one currently used by the government of Tijuana for vehicle “Fast Lanes.” This model is intended to ensure transparency, clearly showing that funds are being directed toward agent compensation and infrastructure.

The project is being developed by a reputable company recognized by both countries. The objective is to allow users to cross the border in a matter of minutes.

The pedestrian CBX terminal will feature advanced technology to streamline the process, including facial identification. As a result, users will be required to have a clean legal record to utilize the service.

The crossing will operate bi-directionally—from Mexico to the United States and vice versa—functioning similarly to the binational connection between the Tijuana International Airport and San Diego, though it will be exclusive to pedestrians.
