Mexico’s tourism sector has received a significant boost following the announcement that two of the country’s most beloved destinations were named among the world’s best small cities in the 2026 Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards.
The federal Secretariat of Tourism (Sectur) shared the news, highlighting Puerto Vallarta and San Miguel de Allende as premier examples of Mexico’s diverse travel appeal. According to the Secretariat, the two cities were recognized for their unique cultural identities, world-class gastronomy, and the distinctive charm of their streets—qualities that continue to make them perennial favorites for international travelers.
The government underscored the contrasting appeal of these two destinations: the “allure of the Pacific” found in Puerto Vallarta and the “cultural richness of the Bajío” region, home to San Miguel de Allende.
The accolades for the country extend beyond urban centers, with a total of six Mexican beaches making the list of the 20 best beaches in the Americas. The rankings showcase Mexico’s dominance in both the Caribbean and Pacific regions:
Tulum (Quintana Roo): Secured a stunning second place with a score of 96.29.
Playa Balandra (Baja California Sur): Ranked fifth with a score of 94.86.
Playa del Carmen (Quintana Roo): Secured the 11th spot with a score of 90.50.
Playa de Akumal (Quintana Roo): Ranked 13th with a score of 88.28.
Puerto Vallarta (Jalisco): Earned the 15th position with a score of 85.77.
Playa del Amor (Isla de las Marietas, Nayarit): Rounded out the top 20 in 16th place with a score of 84.94.
These rankings come as Mexico continues to strengthen its branding as a multifaceted destination that offers everything from high-end coastal retreats to historic inland escapes, solidifying its reputation as a top-tier choice for global tourism.
