Man dies after fall from VIP area at Mexico City stadium before Mexico-Portugal match

Authorities say the man may have been intoxicated and are reviewing surveillance footage and witness accounts as an autopsy is conducted.

A man died Saturday after falling from a VIP area at Mexico City’s newly renovated Banorte Stadium (formerly known as Azteca Stadium), just before an international friendly match was set to begin.

The incident occurred March 28 ahead of a match between Mexico and Portugal, according to the Mexico City Prosecutor’s Office. Authorities said the man fell from a staging area inside the stadium to a parking area below. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials said preliminary reports indicate the man may have been intoxicated and had climbed along the exterior of the venue before attempting to jump from a second-level VIP section to a lower level. He fell during the attempt, Reuters said, citing local authorities.

“From the outset, ministerial, forensic, and investigative police personnel arrived at the scene to begin the corresponding procedures,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement. The area was secured and evidence was collected as part of the investigation.

Authorities said they are reviewing surveillance footage and witness accounts to determine exactly how the incident unfolded. An autopsy is underway to confirm the cause of death and the man’s condition at the time of the fall.

His identity has not been publicly released.
