15 Nevada wild horses headed for slaughter in Mexico, rescue group says.

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A national rescue organization has identified 15 horses from Nevada BLM roundups among animals eligible for slaughter.

The group — Skydog Sanctuary — said unless federal authorities intervene or rescue organizations can secure their release, the horses are scheduled to ship to slaughter in Mexico on Thursday, March 5th, 2026.

Skydog called on federal officials to seize the 15 horses, and it has filed a formal report with the Bureau of Land Management’s Wild Horse and Burro Program after identifying the horses as a Texas “kill pen.”

“This constitutes a clear and documented violation of the BLM sale agreement” Skydog wrote in its complaint to the agency. “It is also a direct violation of federal law.”

A document Skydog provided to 8 News Now shows the roundups where the mustangs were taken off ranges in Nevada.

According to Skydog, the horses — 12 mares and 3 geldings — were held at BLM’s Palomino Valley holding facility outside Reno before being shipped to an adoption event. The adoption event in Livingston, Texas, was on Feb. 27–28. Sale records show the animals were purchased Feb. 28.

That’s the same day they appeared at the Last Chance Kill Pen in Kaufman, Texas, Skydog said.

Skydog representatives said the organization is working to save some of the horses, but has not yet secured placement for all 15 animals. Skydog is a national wild horse rescue organization based in Oregon.
