The Mexican government has borrowed for the third time in the first seven weeks of 2026.
The Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) announced the simultaneous issuance of 35 billion pesos in “sustainable” bonds, which, logically, constitutes debt. However, it is earmarked for environmental, social, and governance (ESG) projects.
This is the third time the government has borrowed in 2026.
- On January 5, it issued 9 billion dollars (154 billion Mexican pesos).
- On January 13, it issued 4.75 billion euros (96.8 billion Mexican pesos).
- And on January 20, it added another 35 billion pesos, for a total of 285 billion pesos.
And all in less than two months.
For this year, the approved external borrowing ceiling is 15.5 billion dollars (266 billion pesos), including development bank loans.
And the authorized net domestic borrowing is 1.78 trillion pesos.
