Members of the UACOL (Union of Oaxacan Artisans and Merchants in Struggle) confronted an American tourist who publicly expressed his support for the US president during a rally in front of the Government Palace.
The heart of Oaxaca’s capital city turned into a confrontation this Tuesday, January 27, when a Trump supporter disrupted the peace. What seemed like a typical afternoon of leisure in the Zócalo, surrounded by the traditional arcades and the majestic Cathedral, took an unexpected turn.
Tourists and locals enjoying the state’s winter weather were surprised by an altercation that quickly escalated from shouting to pushing.
The spark that ignited the conflict was a rally organized by the Union of Oaxacan Artisans and Merchants in Struggle (UACOL). While the group was demonstrating their solidarity with Venezuela and Cuba in front of the Government Palace, a U.S. citizen, identified as a Trump supporter in Oaxaca, decided to confront the speakers.

Tempers flared when the foreigner began defending the Republican politician’s positions, prompting members of the UACOL (Union of Artisans of Oaxaca) to expel him from the area amidst chants and outright rejection of his presence in the public square.
The artisans’ mobilization aimed to highlight the negative impacts of immigration and trade policies, such as tariffs and border restrictions, which have hit the most vulnerable sectors of the local economy.
For the protesters, the figure of the U.S. president represents an obstacle to trade and the mobility of people in Mexican communities.
