Mexico and U.S. Begin Talks on USMCA Reforms

On Wednesday, Mexico and the United States agreed to begin formal discussions on potential USMCA reforms. Mexican Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard met with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, with talks focusing on strengthening rules of origin, collaboration on critical minerals, and measures to protect workers.

The negotiations come amid concerns about unfair competition and dumping of manufactured goods. Both governments emphasized the need to modernize the agreement to reflect evolving industrial and labor realities.

For Mexico, the talks represent an opportunity to secure better protections for domestic producers while maintaining access to North American markets. Analysts suggest that reforms could also help address tensions over energy policy and environmental standards.

The outcome of these negotiations will be closely watched by businesses across the region, as the USMCA remains a cornerstone of Mexico’s economic strategy.
