Former Mayor of Xoxocotlán, Oaxaca, Murdered in cold blood

Investigators are working on two lines of inquiry, one of which is a real estate dispute.

Erasmo Medina Ruiz, the former mayor of Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán and concessionaire of the Guelatao Urban and Suburban Transportation (TUSUG) bus line, was assassinated in the center of this town in the Central Valleys region, near the city of Oaxaca, state authorities confirmed.

According to initial reports, the incident occurred on Moctezuma Street, where a shooting took place. Paramedics who arrived at the scene confirmed that the victim had at least one gunshot wound to the head and no longer had vital signs.

The victim was returning from exercising in El Tequio Park with his daughter; he was shot in broad daylight as he arrived at his home, a few blocks from the Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán Municipal Palace.

The Oaxaca Attorney General’s Office indicated that the attack occurred inside a building and that gunshot wounds caused his death almost immediately.

The head of the State Attorney General’s Office reported that they are working on two lines of investigation, one of which is a real estate dispute.

In response to these events, the institution responsible for the administration of justice, through the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for High-Impact Crimes, deployed a multidisciplinary team and opened investigation file 33129/UEIH/2025 with the objective of clarifying the crime and finding those responsible.

The governor of Oaxaca, Salomón Jara Cruz, stated that the State Attorney General’s Office is already conducting the corresponding investigations.

Erasmo Medina Ruiz was the mayor of Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán and, after his term, worked as a businessman in the transportation sector, in addition to being a concessionaire for an urban transportation company and the owner of a hotel on the Oaxaca coast.
