Emma Coronel, wife of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, has broken her silence with rare revelations about her marriage to the notorious drug kingpin.

In a new documentary titled Married to El Chapo: Emma Coronel Speaks, released by Oxygen on November 28, Coronel offers unprecedented insight into her life with Guzmán, the imprisoned leader of Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel. The former beauty queen, who was freed from U.S. custody in 2023, describes the emotional and logistical challenges of maintaining a relationship with one of the world’s most wanted men.

Coronel recounts how their encounters were marked by secrecy and danger. She revealed that Guzmán never visited her home; instead, she would travel to remote mountain hideouts to see him. To avoid surveillance, she often left her phones behind, switched vehicles mid-journey, and even boarded small planes landing on clandestine airstrips. “Volaba en avionetas para verlo,” she recalls — “I flew in small planes to see him”.

The documentary also explores the personal side of their marriage, portraying Coronel not only as the wife of a cartel boss but as a woman navigating love, loyalty, and fear. She insists she did not initially know Guzmán’s identity when they met in 2007, saying her rural upbringing left her unaware of his notoriety. Over time, however, she became entangled in his world, a relationship that ultimately led to her own imprisonment.

By sharing her story, Coronel sheds light on the human dimension behind one of the most infamous criminal figures of modern times. While Guzmán remains in a U.S. prison serving a life sentence, Coronel’s testimony offers a rare glimpse into the private life of a couple whose union was forged in secrecy and shadow.
