Senator Citlalli Hernández Accuses Lilly Téllez and Salinas Pliego of Fueling Anti-Morena Sentiment After Mayor’s Death

MEXICO CITY — In the wake of the tragic death of Carlos Manzo, the mayor of Uruapan, Michoacán, Morena Senator Citlalli Hernández has publicly accused Senator Lilly Téllez and businessman Ricardo Salinas Pliego of inciting social repudiation against the Morena government. Manzo, known for his outspoken stance against organized crime, was killed earlier this week under circumstances that remain under investigation.

Hernández, a prominent figure in the ruling Morena party, took to social media and Senate forums to denounce what she described as a “coordinated campaign of disinformation and political hostility” led by opposition voices. She claimed that Téllez and Salinas Pliego have used their platforms to “distort public perception” and “exploit tragedy for partisan gain.”

“The death of Carlos Manzo should unite us in grief and resolve, not be weaponized to deepen division,” Hernández stated. She also called for respect toward public servants who risk their lives in high-conflict zones like Michoacán.

While Téllez has not directly responded to the accusations, she has previously criticized Morena’s handling of security and governance. Salinas Pliego, a vocal libertarian and media mogul, has also clashed with the administration over economic and regulatory issues.

The controversy adds to growing political tension as Mexico approaches the 2026 presidential election. Analysts warn that the politicization of violence could further polarize public discourse and undermine efforts to address insecurity.

Carlos Manzo’s funeral was attended by local officials and community members who hailed him as a courageous leader. His death has reignited calls for stronger protections for municipal leaders in regions plagued by cartel violence.
