Thirteen suspected members of an armed group were killed Monday in a clash with federal agents in the Mexican state of Sinaloa, where a wave of violence has raged for over a year due to a dispute between two factions of the Sinaloa Cartel.
The gun battle occurred shortly after noon in the town of La Brecha, in the municipality of Guasave, in the northern part of this northwestern state, where suspected criminals, hiding under a bridge, attacked federal agents during a patrol.
Federal Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch stated on his social media account that “13 attackers” were killed at the scene and four others were arrested. It was not specified which criminal organization they belonged to.
During the operation, nine people who had been kidnapped were freed, García Harfuch added. Authorities seized seven vehicles, high-powered weapons, and tactical gear.
Since September of last year, a wave of violence has swept through the state due to an internal power struggle between two factions of the Sinaloa Cartel. One faction comprises the sons of the organization’s former leader, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, and the other consists of followers of his associate, Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada. Both are currently imprisoned in the United States.
The clashes began after the arrest of Zambada along with Joaquín Guzmán López, one of “El Chapo’s” sons, in Texas in July 2024.
