From the National Palace, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced that this year’s Day of the Dead celebration is dedicated to the country’s Indigenous women, the ancestors of Mexico.
“This year, we dedicate it to the ancestors of Mexico: the Indigenous women of Mexico. In this Year of Indigenous Women, we celebrate the Day of the Dead for all our ancestors,” she emphasized in a video posted on her social media.
The Head of the Federal Executive showed the people of Mexico the Day of the Dead altar set up in the National Palace, thanks to the support of the Ministry of Culture and the National Institute of Indigenous Peoples (INPI).
“It is this beautiful tradition of the Mexican people to celebrate our dead differently, as they come to visit us on this Day of the Dead. We remember them, offer them food, and cherish them,” she explained.
She noted that this is a very different tradition from those of other cultures, as it is a view of death that comes from the indigenous peoples of our country.
“And you know, this beautiful marigold flower, which we use in Day of the Dead offerings or with which we decorate our homes, is a native flower of Mexico. Wherever you find it, know that this flower originated here in Mesoamerica,” she explained.
